Inspiration.

I've been waiting to finish this quilt for a while.
DSC_0949

Basically because I was stuck.
I didn't know what to bind it in.
At first I thought orange. But it was just way too much orange.
And then I thought maybe the cream color I also used in the quilt.
But I'm not a fan of super-light colored bindings.
I always think they look dirty.

So, since those were the only two colors in the quilt, and I didn't like either of those choices,
I folded it up
and put it on a shelf until inspiration to finish struck.

It struck today.
Meet my inspiration:
Inspiration

Yup, a plate full of cucumbers and dip.
Or, if you're Willow, "cumumbers and dippits".

So, thanks to a handy-dandy afternoon snack,
I decided that some kind of green needed to be the binding for my quilt.
After some auditions, I chose Anna Maria Horner's Polka Line
(can't remember what the color is called-my bad)
And I'm super pumped about the results.

Hunting Camp Quilt Roll

And I'm exciting about the quilting too.
I finally pulled out my quilting guide after 2 years of not using it.
I know, weird.
I usually do straight line quilting on either side of the seams.
Or I used tape to mark my lines.
But today, I went with the guide and I forgot how much I love it.

Hunting Camp Quilting Detail

For the backing I used a fun
orange and cream striped fabric from my stash that I think I got at the Goodwill forever ago.
Or a garage sale.
Hunting Camp Back and Binding

Can't remember... anyways, it's SUPER soft.
SUPER. soft.

Hunting Camp Quilt

Quilt stats:
"Hunting Camp"
(because it reminds me of all the colors and stuff you'd see at a hunting camp)
Half Square Triangle Quilt
Joel Dewberry Aviary charms (leftovers)
Cream and orange Kona solids
AMH Polka Line (olive and orange)- binding
38x43"
Warm and natural batting
Machine quilted
Machine stitched binding.

And Willow has been telling stories lately that always end in,
"they were very best friends, and they were sooo happy, and then they made a quilt".

And I think that is hilarious.
When people are happy they make quilts.
She must think I'm really, really happy.

She told me she wants to "ride around with the windows closed".
I think she meant open...

So, I went with this one...

Thanks for everybody's help in the
String Quilt v. Disappearing 9 Patch Debate!

I figured I owed it to you guys to show you which design I went with:
1 down, 24 to go...

THE STRING QUILT!!

I'm super excited.
I stayed up WAY too late sorting through scraps, cutting, trimming, ironing and prepping.
I've never ironed my scraps before.

Prepping!
Don't they look nice?

I think the only reason I did this time was because I broke the last needle on my sewing machine and didn't have a backup (weird) and REALLY wanted to get started on my quilt because I feel this sort of impending doom that I will NOT have enough time to finish everything that needs to get finished before the baby comes and I just wanted to feel like I was getting something done.
Even if all the ironing was unnecessary.
My mom would say it wasn't.
She irons everything.
EVERYTHING.
So there you go, Mom, I'm sure that makes you happy.

This is what my sewing table looked like after I made the first block.
Scraps
Scraps galore.
But it's just so. much. fun.

I'm using the foundation piecing method this time around instead of the paper piecing method.
2 reasons:
I didn't have paper big enough for the size of blocks I wanted to make (11")
and
I wanted to try out the different method using muslin squares.
I'm a teensy bit worried that the quilt will be extremely heavy because of the
extra muslin squares
(instead of the paper, which you just rip off after piecing)
but I figured it's ok to have a heavy quilt.
Right?
Just that much more comfy...

Oh, and I figured out that I'm going to need 25 complete string blocks.
Each "complete" string block (that's just what I call it) is made up of 4 smaller blocks.
That means I will need to piece and sew 96 more 11" blocks in order to complete my king size quilt.
I'm slightly overwhelmed by these numbers, but I think I can do it.

Oh, and if you haven't already, go enter yourself in the Lazy Sunday Giveaway.
All you have to do is leave a comment.
Anybody can enter until midnight Tuesday and the winner will be announced Wednesday.

Good Luck!

Lazy Sunday Giveaway!

Ok, as promised, I present you with the first Lazy Sunday Giveaway...
aren't you so happy?

In my opinion, Sundays are for hanging out and being completely lazy without feeling guilty.

for you are embracing the spirit of the Lazy Sunday.
Oh, and Lazy Sundays are perfect for catching a midday kitchen performance by your favorite little performer.
Sunday kitchen performances

Just in case you didn't know that already.
Sunday kitchen performance 2
The crossed legs in this picture kills me. I love it.

So in order for you to win some stuff while being lazy on Sunday
(sounds like multi-tasking to me...)
I'm going to be giving some fun things away.

DSC_0573
Willow, totally embracing the lazy vibe.

Yay for you.

Here's how it will work.
The gifts will always change.
Never the same thing twice, because that is boring.
Sometimes you will know exactly what the prize is, sometimes you won't.
But you will always know that it will include something handmade by yours truly.
It may be big, it may be small, but it will always be awesome.
And I'm fairly certain you will always be happy with your giveaway win.
I aim to please.
Which is definitely good for you.
Sometimes the rules might change for entering... I'm just winging it.

This week's giveaway is for this little lovely:
DSC_0597

It's a 21x21" pieced pillow cover.
I believe there's some Heather Bailey in there as well as some Amy Butler fabric.
It's pretty cute.
And it's pretty big!

So, if you want to have a chance at winning it,
all you have to do is leave a comment under this post.
Anybody can enter... go for it. You just might get lucky!
I'll pick the winner on Wednesday!!

That's it!
Say whatever you want.
Be creative.
Make me laugh.
But don't over-exert yourself... it is Lazy Sunday after all.

Weekend Plans.

This weekend is the Hubby's birthday weekend.
He's so anti-birthday it's not even funny.
But, since he married me, we celebrate birthdays anyway!
Whether you like it or not.
Seriously, who doesn't love a reason to celebrate?

DSC_1016
Happy Birthday Babe!!

I'm planning on making him some delish homemade brownies to take to work with him on Monday.
Yeah, I'm sure he'll just love that.

Besides all the birthday hullabaloo (or lack thereof), I've actually been getting some quality sewing time in.
I'm really not sure how.
And to top it all off, my house is clean AND I've been making amazing dinners
every. single. night.

I blame it all on the latest Cooking Light magazine.
I picked it up during last week's Story Time at the bookstore.
(I suggest you go out and grab a copy.)
I honestly don't even know why we still go to Story Time.
Willow just turns around the opposite way of all the other kids on the bench and reads her own story.
For real.
She won't sing the songs.
She won't play the games.
I'm pretty sure she's only in it for the craft projects and the blueberry muffin.
DSC_0936
That's my girl...

Anyway.
Sewing.
I've been completing projects and that feels good.

And some other stuff that I can't quite show you yet...

And to all the people who helped me out with the String Quilt/9-patch Quilt situation, Thanks!
I'll show you which one I went with tomorrow....
(isn't that sneaky?)

And, speaking of tomorrows...
Tomorrow is Sunday and I think I'm going to do some
Lazy Sunday Giveaways
for the next couple of weeks or so, just to see how it goes.
If you people like it, it might just stick around for a while.

What is Lazy Sunday you ask?
It's a title I made up for Sunday, duh.
So come back tomorrow to see if being lazy wins you anything, k?
Ok.

A Little Help?

I'm finally ready to start finally making the quilt that will eventually go on our bed.
I mean, right now is the perfect time, right?
About to have a baby, 6561561685 projects in the works, nursery to completely put together, re-arranging every room in the house, and the list just goes on and on.
Whatever.
I'm ready. I know I'll make the time somehow.
We always do for the projects we really want to finish, right?

Ok, so here's my color scheme:

DSC_0920

Greys, teals, yellows, and a little bit of lime.
I've been hoarding/collecting/saving up my fave fabrics for the project...
I'm just noticing now that I think there's a pile missing.
I don't see a few that should be in there.

Here's the thing...
I don't know what kind of quilt I want to make.
There are SO many possibilities. And I really do like them all.
That's why I want to make a decision and start cutting into fabric.
That way there's no turning back and I'll be forced into quilt completion!

Of everything out there,
I've narrowed it down to either
a
DSC_0933

or

DSC_0685

and this one:
DSC_0696

This is where I need your help.
Please.
Leave a comment and let me know which one you think I should go with.
Because I'm totally stuck.
I don't care who you are.
Just tell me.
I don't care if you just stumbled across this blog and it's the first time you ever read it.
I need help.
I don't care if you've never seen a quilt before in your whole life.
Just pick one.
I would survey everyone on the planet, if I could.
But, I can't, so this is obviously the next step.

Oh, and thanks in advance :)

Quick Little St. Patty's Day Dress Tutorial

I have a tutorial to share.
When I was thinking about sharing this post, I apparently thought I was with it enough to get it posted before the actual St. Patty's Day so that you could make this before hand.
I don't know why I thought that.
Maybe I was dreaming that I was all organized and stuff.
In real life, I made this dress about 15 min. before we had to leave for Story Time because Willow doesn't have a single green thing to wear.
Like, not. a. thing.
Now, she has a cute little 4 leaf clover applique dress!
And that 15 min included taking pics for the tutorial...
So, yeah, it's really quick and easy.
We were even on time. Early, some might say.

You need some green scraps. The size of scraps obviously depends on the size of your kid.
Duh.

You also need a shirt, onesie, dress, skirt, or whatever that you don't mind gluing a shamrock to.

Example: ugly green dress that is in desperate need of some fun.
Honestly, stained shirts work great, and you get to feel all cool and good about up-cycling.
If you're like me,
you have a million stained shirts that you won't throw away but aren't suitable for public viewing.
And/or way too many super boring-plain clothes you bought for your lovey
thinking that one day, when you had all that spare time that's so plentiful,
you could jazz it up a bit and make it cute.
And, if you're still anything like me, you have a whole bin of boring-plain clothes that your child has never worn but has grown out of.
It's that whole 'spare time' thing...

You also need a glue stick, paper and pen, some pins (optional) and a sewing machine
(or you could hand-stitch if you're one of those planning ahead types).

Okay, you draw a kinda heart-shaped thing on some paper.
Just free-hand it.
You can do it.
You're creative.
If you've ever looked at a clover, it's leaves are shaped like hearts.
Cut it out.
You only need one of these things.
Then, you pick out your fave green scraps, pin the awesomely crude pattern to the scraps and cut out the heart shape.
(Repeat process until you have enough leaves)
You need 3 or 4 fabric scrap leaves, depending on how lucky you want to be.

Arrange them in a way that makes you happy.
Oh, and cut out a little stem.

Glue them on to your clothing.
Seriously.
I told you this was the fast and easy way.
Just glue.
You'll end up with something like this:
Then, you zig-zag stitch around the outside of your clover to keep in place.
And if you're lucky enough to find a big, huge green button on your floor, then you can go ahead and sew that to the middle of your clover.
Just for fun.

And there you go.
That's it.
Easy peasy.
Good luck!
(Pun intended.)

***
In other news,
the Hubby and I went to Chicago over the weekend for some
St. Patty's Day shenanigans.
Chelsea, Ty, Me, and the Hubby at the river after it turned green.

We had a blast.
Oh, and my shirt says "RUB FOR GOOD LUCK" on the belly.
It was fun.
I highly suggest if if you're pregnant on St. Patrick's Day.
Not kidding.

Did you know they dye the river green with orange dye?
They do.
And don't worry, it's vegetable dye so it doesn't hurt the fishys.

Before:
After:

Happy St. Patty's Day!
Go pinch somebody who's not wearing green and call your kids 'hooligans' all day long :)

It's Beginning to Feel a Lot Like Springtime...

There was finally a nice spring-y little something in the air today...
So I just had to open the windows and let it in the house, of course.
It was lovely.
There's nothing like breathing in crisp, fresh air when you're inside your house.
Nothing.
And the way the sun was coming through my front window made me want to get out my camera and play while Willow was napping.
I love old things.
Especially old furniture, old wooden spools of silky thread, and old glassware.
Oh, and velvet things. I like velvet things, too.
I do not like antiques, however.
'Old things' and 'antiques' are not to be confused with each other.
What's the difference?
I don't really know... I couldn't tell you.
But there certainly is a difference.

While I was playing with my old things and my camera, I remembered that I had a new thing to share!

Voila!
The Anjou Spring Dress

I was inspired somewhat by these, which I just love.
But I was mostly inspired by these old things I've been sorting into fun little piles.
Do you ever do that?
Unnecessarily sort things?
I just re-sort and re-organize for no good reason at all... just because.
It makes me happy.

And that awesome fabric just had to be put to good use, right?
And I didn't want to cut it all up... too pretty.
And when it came in the mail Willow shouted,
"For ME? I LOVE it, Mom!"
So, there you have it, the combined inspirations for a fabulous little girl dress.

I just sort of pulled bits and pieces from different dresses I liked to come up with this one.
I guess you could call it somewhat of an experiment.
The bunching of the sheer/mesh yellow polka dot fabric was definitely a new thing for me.
I really loved how it turned out and the texture it added to the dress.
I either got it at a yard sale or on the clearance shelf at a fabric shop because I have lots and lots of it and I don't know why else I would have bought it!

The flower brooch was put together using some raw silk, velvet ribbon, and that pretty little bloom.
And it's detachable for washing :)

I can't wait for Willow to wear this dress out and about!
I also think it would make the perfect Easter dress!

If you don't have your Easter dress yet, don't worry!
I'm still taking orders.
You can order yours using the drop-down menu on the right side of the page.
Or, if you're interested in having something like The Anjou Spring Dress, email me at
willowbeanmama@gmail.com
and we'll whip something up that's one-of-a-kind for your little one!

Go open your windows because Spring is in the air!

It was only 9 am... and then I cried.

There are absolutely no pictures in this post. You'll soon understand why.

Let’s see…

This morning started when Willow poured the leftover contents of our breakfast smoothies from the blender onto the countertop, which obviously oozed its way onto the floor, the dishwasher, and then to the piles of crap that I have gotten way too used to having on the kitchen counter.

Then, there was the mixing of the sugar and milk on the kitchen floor while mommy was gone for .00002 seconds throwing all the smoothie towels into the washing machine.

You know when you’re a kid and your mom turns her head for a second and you take that time to douse your cereal with as much sugar as possible because you know it’s not a mom-approved amount (which makes it just that much better) and then by the time you get to the bottom of the bowl there is this thick, syrupy super-sweet gunk just waiting for you to slurp up?

Yeah, well that was covering my entire kitchen floor when I returned from the laundry room.

Willow went to timeout.

When I went into the bathroom to retrieve the only clean towels left in the house big enough to tackle the sugar-syrup fiasco, I came across two brand new rolls of toilet paper sitting in the toilet bowl, swollen with water. I calmly went to the kitchen to grab some plastic grocery bags to deal with the soggy toilet paper situation; I was soon reminded that my floor is covered in goo.

So I climbed my 7-months-pregnant self on to the stove to reach the bags.

Don’t worry, I completed my mission unscathed… I’m just glad nobody was there to see it. It was not pretty.

On the way back to the bathroom I heard a never-good, “Ugggh, Willow!!”, which is exactly what Willow says when she’s made a huge mess.

From her nice little corner of timeout, somebody managed to find a permanent black marker and then proceeded to draw all over herself and the front door. Strangely enough, I was grateful she found the marker because I knew yesterday it had been misplaced and needed to be located before something bad happened. Well…

Before I even said a word, Willow informed me she had just had an accident in timeout. I wanted to tell her that if maybe she had been focusing on her bodily functions a little more than she was on decorating herself and my entryway, there wouldn’t have been a problem.

I bit my tongue and stripped off her clothes.

I put Willow in the tub, turned on the water, and shoved my hand into the toilet to grab the TP using my plastic bags-turned-gloves. I turned back around just in time to see- but not in time to stop (of course)- my sweet child squeeze a half-full bottle of shampoo onto the floor, with the entire lid off, to ensure the quickest flow of suds, I’m sure.

I took the now-empty bottle from her hands and shut off the water. I never even managed to plug up the water in the first place, so I walked into the kitchen to throw away the evidence of the Shampoo Spill as well as the Toilet Paper Soak.

Oh yeah, that’s right, my kitchen is still freaking covered in goo which is slowly turning to glue, which is covered in the last usable towels in the house.

Awesome.

So, I climbed my 7-months-pregnant self back over the stove to toss the crap in the garbage, which is when I accidentally opened the oven door with my hand.

*I think everyone should know at this point that my hand on the oven door was holding up almost all my weight as well as keeping me from falling.*

Needless to say, the opening of the oven door skewed my already-messed-up sense of balance even more and I was tossed, inevitably, into the kitchen-floor goo.

I heard a “What was that?” from the bathtub.

I calmly replied, “Nothing.”

“I need a towel.” was the response I got.

I muttered, “Yeah, good luck with that.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Okay.”

I was picking myself up from the plunge into the goo when I heard Willow turn on the water.

“Turn it off, please.”

And yes, I did say please… because manners are important- even when half your body is covered in the stickiest, sugariest, grossest junk on the planet.

“What? I can’t hear you. I’m going to clean up my mess.”

“What mess?” -that’s right I had already completely forgotten about the pile of shampoo that awaited me once I returned to the bathroom.

“No don’t clean it, Mommy will get it!”

“What?”

…SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH…

Shit.

I literally peeled myself from my kitchen floor, stuck my foot into a nearby shoebox to prevent the spreading of the stick, and walk-shuffled around the corner to find soapy water flooding out of my bathroom and into my hallway.

I walk-shuffle-floated into the bathroom, shut off the water, picked Willow out of the tub, ditched my soaked cardboard shoe for a nearby flip-flop, went downstairs to look for something- anything- to clean up something-anything.

Then, from the laundry room I heard the distinct sound of dripping coming from the other room. I grabbed a pile of rags, dirty –I’m sure, and nervously peeked in the direction of the dripping sound.

Water was leaking from my bathroom, through the ceiling, onto my entertainment center in the basement. I half-ran (remember? pregnant) upstairs with my inadequate pile of dirty rags, half-sticking to my stupid flip-flop because of my goo covered foot. The water had advanced from the bathroom, to the hallway, and into the front room.

Somebody please explain to me how 4 quick splashes of water from a hair-rinsing cup equals total destruction of my 1st floor.

I’ll tell you how: because I’m me and Willow is my daughter. That’s how. THAT’S. HOW.

RECAP:

Partly wiped smoothie smears all over the counter, serious thicker-than-syrup-and-slowly-turning-into-cement concoction covering the kitchen floor, permanent marker all over my front door and my child, a puddle in the entryway, yucky-wet clothes tossed into a pile, warm soapy water slowly making its way through the bathroom, into the hallway and out into the rest of my house as well as leaking into the basement and onto my wooden TV stand, carpet, and lamp, I’m covered in gritty, sticky, kitchen floor goo, Willow is covered in permanent marker, wet, and naked because the whole ‘take a bath’ thing obviously didn’t pan out, there are no more towels to clean anything up or dry anyone off, and I can’t get to the only two sinks in the house without either navigating my way through sticky slime or wading through a lake.

I managed to stay surprisingly calm through everything. Really, I did. I even freaked me out a little bit.

-BUT-

and here it is...

I looked at the clock, it said 9 am… and then I cried.

At least I got the rolls of TP out of the toilet.

EDITED TO ADD:

I'm sure everyone will be glad to know that the milk-and-sugar cement has since been scraped off my kitchen floor. I used a dust pan as the scraper along with boiling hot water and then I mopped about 7 times, so the floor is no longer sticky.

The permanent marker has been Magic Erasered off my front door. It took 2 to complete the job... but it's clean. Willow is next...

I had to use dirty towels to wipe up the shampoo mess in the bathroom/hallway/front room. But that's okay because I think the soapy shampoo kind of helped cancel out the dirtiness of the towels. I guess it turned out in the end because my bathroom floor is now REALLY clean.

The basement was mostly unharmed in the making of the messes.

All of the dirty clothes and towels made their way down to the laundry room. I know what I'll be doing today: 4 basketfuls of my favorite chore. yeahnotreally.

Willow is still covered in marker and has not yet taken a bath. But there aren't any towels anyway, so I'm fine with it.

She IS taking a nap, however, which is what allowed the cleaning to commence.

I will no longer be hoisting myself on to any more appliances, kitchen or otherwise.

I got to take a shower to melt all the stickiness off of myself, but I had to dry off with a sweatshirt... no big deal.

Oh, and I only cried for a minute or two because my doctor's office called and interrupted my self-pity party to inform me that I had missed my appointment this morning. For the second time in a row.

AND... I wouldn't trade in my little Willow for anything in the whole world!

I think she was just testing me...

I did something kinda cool... I think.

So, remember this Happy Pillow?
No?
Ok, well I made it out of an extra Dresden Plate I had just sitting around.
It's all hand-stitched and cool stuff like that.
And I LOVE it.
And it's staying in my house, with me, which I love even more.

Well, turns out I entered it in a pillow contest over at Sew, Mama, Sew.
Yeah, that's when I did it.
That's when I entered my Happy little pillow cover.

Here's a funny story.
I checked Sew, Mama, Sew just about every day to see if my pillow made it as a
"Pillow of the Day,"
which is the contest I thought I had entered.
Well, yesterday came and went, and my Happy pillow still hadn't made it, and therefore, my hopes were dashed.
BUT WAIT... there is a Pillow Contest as well?
My hopes are back to undashed!
Yesterday was the unveiling of the Top 20 pillows for the "Words to Live By" category, and I had to wait until today to see if my hand-stitched ray of sunshine made it.

Guess what?
I made it into the Top 20!
So now there's a voting thing happening, and people can go vote for their 2 favorite pillows.

...and if it happens to be for my pillow, well, that would just be fantastic now wouldn't it?

Here's the part that makes it kinda cool:
I told my Hubby about not making Pillow of the Day.
I was bummed.
Like everysinglemorning when I checked the website.
For about 2 weeks.
I think he was getting a tad sick of hearing about it the disappointment.
Then I told him about the actual contest that was happening and how I still had a glimmer of hope.
I'm sure he was just as pumped as me.

Well, anyways, this morning I caught him checking the website to see if my pillow made it...
(and that's how I know I did something kinda cool.)
